Tim Cook from Apple revealed this year’s line of iPhones at the new Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California last Wednesday. They are three different models of iPhones this time around, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X (it’s ten in Roman numerals, not an actual X).
The new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus really only have a couple of new features that improve on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, essentially making them a “7s” caliber phone. This begs me to ask the question, do we really need the iPhone 8 line?
Here is a list of all the features in the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models. Doesn’t look so breathtaking, right? Besides wireless and fast charging, I can’t really see the buying points for these two phones at this time. Plus getting a phone because it has wireless charging means you’re probably going to want to use the Qi capabilities, so you are going to spend a little more to get a charger with wireless charging functions.
Can we also say something that hasn’t been vocalized enough? These charging features that are new on the iPhone have been on Android and other phones for years. Fast charging has been a thing since the iPhone 6 and a little before that. And wireless charging is on all Samsung devices right now and has been on other types of phones a couple years back.
Apple has been making plus versions of the iPhone since the iPhone 6, but do we not remember when Samsung added the Note series onto their line of phones? I don’t think Apple is wrong for adding the Plus models to their iPhones, but they appear to always think they are the first to the punch when in reality they have not been creative in a long time.
Look, I get it. Tim Cook might be trying to get everyone to get the most expensive phone by making the other ones look bad. But Apple is not innovating anymore. The last time they innovated was when they added Siri, and besides that, there were just a couple more small things, like double sided lightning connectors and True-Tone Flash for the camera. Honestly, if they only sold an iPhone X and possible iPhone X Plus, This would be a much better launch for them.
